Harvey Mason and Steve Gadd

My friend P contacts me the other day and goes: "wanna go see Harvey Mason tomorrow?" My answer, before he had time to finish his question, was: "Harvey Mason!! Of course!!" So the next day, I met up with P and we went to the concert hall together. At the entrance, we see the poster for the show and it said: "Harvey Mason Trio, Steve Gadd and the Crusaders, Dave Koz and friends." The first thing that came to my mind was, "geez, Gadd is also playing here...I wonder when his show is?!?!" Then it hit me. I was holding a ticket to see Mason AND Gadd! P himself didn't even know. We were pleasantly surprised. VERY pleasantly.

この前、友人のPからいきなり連絡あって、「明日ハーヴィー・メイソン観に行かない？」ときた。「メイソン！勿論だ！」とそく返した。翌日、Pと一緒に会場に行ってたら、入口のポスターに「ハーヴィー・メイソン・トリオ、スティーヴ・ガッドとクルセィーダーズ、及びデイーヴ・コズと友達」と書いてあった。そこで、まず思ったのは、「ガッドが来日しているのかあ、いつライブやるのかな〜」。。。とその瞬間、俺が持っているチケットでこの三つのライブが観れることに気づいた。実際にPもメイソンのみだと思い込んでいて、ガッドが観れるなんて、夢にも思っていなかった。でも、やっぱり、ガッカリするのが怖いので、何遍も二人で確認した。本当にこのチケットでガッドが観れるんだよねって。

Thanks to years of attendance at the Montreal Drumfest, I've had the opportunity to see MANY of the top drummers in the world, including Dennis Chambers, Vinnie Colaiuta, Terry Bozzio, Thomas Lang, Virgil Donati, Joe Morello, Dom Famularo, Dave Weckl, Horacio Hernandez, Chad Smith, you name it... but not Gadd, yet. And he's been number one on my drummers-to-see-before-I-die list. Then the opportunity comes to me out of nowhere, without any expectations whatsoever.

俺は何年もモントリオール・ドラム・フェスティバルに行ってたので、世界中のトップドラマーを見てきた。デニ・チェン、カラユータ、ボジオ、ラング、バージル・ドナーティ、ジョー・モレロ、ウェックル、などなど。。。でもガッドは観ていない。未だに。彼は俺の「死ぬまでに観なければならないドラマー・リスト」のナンバーワンだった。それが、このように全く期待してなかった状況下でいきなりガッドが観れるチャンスが降って来るとは。

The show was absolutely amazing. It started with a short set with Mason and his trio. Some wicked swinging took place.

やっぱり、凄いライブだった。最初のセットにメイソンが出てきて、凄まじいスウィングを披露してくれた。やっぱり、ジャズってこうでなくちゃ。

Then Gadd brought out his Crusaders and he showed us how to groove, with some insanely simple, yet delicate and nuanced drumming. Beautiful. Just beautiful. Then of course, in the middle of his set, he lets a solo rip. Thunderous.

セカンド・セットは、ガッドとクルセィーダーズというバンド。ガッドはどのような音楽にも最強なグルーブを引き出せるので有名。あの晩も、期待通り、素晴らしいドラムの演奏を聴かせてくれた。シンプルなビートに魔法をかける様なミュージカル・マジシャン。

The third set was a bonus. Some saxophonist called Dave Koz. He and his band gave a great show. He also brought out a cute little 19 year-old called Kelly Sweet. She made me think of Michelle Branch with her voice. Nice pair of... lungs.
サード・セットに至った時点ではもう全てプラスαって感じ。このセットはデーブ・コズというサックスのオッサン。でも、とても良かったよ。そして、途中に１９才のカワイイ女の子をステージに出した。彼女の名前はケリー・スイート。うん、ミシェル・ブランチを思い出させてくれる、まさにスイート（甘い）声。

Thanks P, it was truly an amazing show. Now, you wanna help me see number two on my drummers-to-see-before-I-die list? That would be funkmeister David Garibaldi!

Pありがとう、最高のライブだったよ！次は、俺の「死ぬまでに観なければならないドラマー・リスト」のナンバー２を見に行こうぜ！ファンクのマスター、デビッド・ガリバルディー！

Finally, here I leave you with another little clip of Thomas Lang, who I talked about in a surprisingly popular post some time ago. It was recorded at the 2007 Montreal Drumfest (too bad I wasn't there!). What a machine this guy is.

最後にトーマス・ラングのビデオでしめるね。前にも記事にした時、思ったよりも人気があってね。今回紹介するビデオは２００７年のモントリオール・ドラム・フェスティバルで取られたもの（生で観れなくて残念！）。この人、本当に人間かな。。。
