So yesterday morning I was riding in the packed subway on my way to work. I was reading a book while standing closely behind a guy. Then suddenly... I sneezed. And I did a Zidane to the back of his head. Of course, he wasn't happy.
昨日の朝、いつもの通り、満員電車に乗って会社に向いました。そこら辺のオッサンの後ろに立って、本を読んでいたら。。。「ハックション！」。。。と同時にジダンのように、オッサンの後頭部に頭突きを一発かました。勿論、凄い目で睨まれた。すんません、オッサン。
Yes, I officially received the grade for the last course of my MBA. It's all over now.
Working full-time while studying, the last 2 years have probably made me age about 10. Especially the last 2.5 months, as I had to juggle the MBA and a new job, along with some carry-over work from the last job, in addition to moving. But all that is behind me now.
Getting to the end of the MBA was pure hell. But I don't regret one single minute. I keep telling everyone I know, it was probably the best decision I have ever made in my career. And now I have started a new position that precisely requires the kind of background that I have built over the past years, i.e., heavy scientific knowledge along with management know-how and linguistic skills. Of course, it's a very challenging job and every single day is a learning experience. But it's so exciting and I don't think I could have written a better scenario for my real career start.
はい、正式にMBA最後の授業の成績が出た。これで安心して卒業できます。
仕事しながら勉強をしてきたこの２年間で１０才位老けたんじゃないかと思うよ。特にここ２ヶ月半位はMBAの最後もあり、新しい仕事も始まり、そして前の仕事の残りもちょっとあって、さらにその間、引越しまでしちゃって。死ぬかと思ったよ。でも、もう大丈夫。
いや〜、最後まで地獄のようだったけど、本当にやってよかったよ。いつも皆に言うけど、多分MBAを始めた事は俺のキャリアの中では、最高な決断だったよ。御陰で、今は本当に自分のバックグラウンドを最大限に活かす様な職にも付けたし。それは、科学の知識は勿論、その上マネージメントのノーハウと語学の能力も必要。凄く刺激的で、毎日がチャレンジと勉強です。本当の意味で、これより良いキャリアのスタートはないだろう。
Going back to Canada in July was great. Had a lot of fun seeing family and friends, doing the MBA program, and EATING. Big problem. I'm not the biggest guy around, but I got my little tire that I've always wanted to get rid of. Well, going back home only pumped more air (or grease) into my tire and I've had it. Must get it off! So I figured I could jog. Well, a few weeks ago, following my buddy T's advice, I got myself a Suunto Running Pack, featuring the 3 things you see in the picture. The watch (which I needed anyways) is a little computer that takes info from the heart-rate monitor belt and the foot pod. I get to see heart-rates, calories burned, distances, time, and speed.
With it, I have now successfully shed about 7 lbs since I got back (although I'm not too sure whether that's actually from the jogging or simply the effect of lower calorie intake in the absence of mom). Anyways, a very impressive little kit. ...but so was the price. Hopefully it'll motivate me to keep at it.
この前カナダに帰って本当に楽しかったよ。家族と友達ともいっぱい会えたし、MBAの授業の取れたし、美味しいものも沢山食っちゃった。ヤバ。俺はけした、「デブ」というカテゴリーには入らないと思うけど、早期中年太りには気をつけたいよね。でも、カナダではちょっと意思弱人間になって、食っちゃった！ガッツリと。だから、ジョギングでも初めて、体重を減らそうかなと思ってさ。友人のT君のお勧めで、数週間前に写真に写されているSuuntoのランニング・パックを買っちゃった。まあ、どうせ時計も必要だったし。これ面白いよ。時計は小さなコンピュータみたいなもので、胸につけるベルトから心拍数を測り、足につけるフット・ポッドから距離とスピードを出してくれる。さらに、消費したカロリーも記録してくれる！
このおもちゃで早速３キロ位落としたよ！でも、これは実際にジョギングの成果なのか、母ちゃんがいない時の食生活なのかはいまいち分からん。まあ、いずれにせよ、凄いマシーンだ。。。勿論、値段も凄かった。もったいないから、ちゃんと走らないとね。
Yup, I’ve broken the record for the longest stretch without renewing my blog. One and a half month. And the whole month of July without a post. I’m sorry.
Right now I am in Newark with my parents. I’ll be catching a flight from NY JFK in two days so my parents drove me down here. We’ll visit Ground Zero and the Statue of Liberty tomorrow.
I just finished a painful but extremely rewarding intensive MBA program (3 courses in 3 weeks) at the McGill main campus in Montreal. I’ve not only learned a lot, but also made many many friends. What a great program! Do check out the McGill MBA Japan Experience Blog in a few days as I will make a little post there for that wonderful experience.
Yes, of course I also played a round of golf! With Greg. And I was definitely very happy to see his twins for the first time, too!

いまはニューワーク。ニューヨークの隣。明後日、JFKから東京に帰るので、親に車で送ってもらった。ニューヨーク観光も勿論。明日はグラウンド・ゼロと自由の女神を見に行く。
ここ一ヶ月はキツかったぜ。マギール本校の方で集中講義を受けてたのだ。３週間で３単位のコースを三つ。激しすぎ。でも、最高に楽しかったし、お友達もいっぱい出来たので凄く嬉しい。マギールのブログの方にもその体験談と写真をアップするので、お楽しみに！
勿論、その後はちょっと休んだし、グレッグとゴルフも出来たので、満足。アイツの双子にも会えたので最高！
さあ、そろそろ現実モードに戻る準備をしないと。

The title of this blog is “2006: A New Start for Tetsu”. Without going into details and enumerating things, I would just like to say that it was a wonderful year during which countless good things happened, many of which will have changed my life forever, and I’ll have my parents, co-workers, and friends to thank.
So, obviously, this blog was started in 2006. End of February to be precise. At first I wrote about two entries per week. Then with the start of my MBA, the pace dropped to once per week (and sometimes less). In total, there are about 75 entries, and below is my selection of the most popular or most memorable posts.
このブログのタイトルは ”2006: A New Start for Tetsu” 、「２００６：哲の新たなスタート」です。あまり深入りはしませんが、ただ一つ言いたいのは、本当に色んな良い事があった一年でした。これも、親、職場の上司・仲間、そして友人たちのお陰です。心の底から感謝します。

Boy, the last few days have been pretty tough. An all-nighter party Saturday with my RaiA bandmates, followed by a Finance midterm on Sunday, and of course, another all-nighter Christmas party with the MBA folks after that.
The lack of sleep turned out to be good, however, as I was able to snore my way back to Canada during the flights. Surprisingly, back home, the temperature was pretty high, at ~10°C and no snow on the ground. But that didn't last very long as the next day, there was snow everywhere.
Tomorrow I'm off to Las Vegas with my family!

いや〜、最近の数日は激しかったです。土曜は俺ん家でRaiAのメンバーたちと忘年会。連中が帰ったのは朝の５時半。日曜はファイナンスの試験！多分最悪。その後はまたMBAのクリスマスパーティー！またもオール。朝帰りで、荷造りして、その足で空港に向かった。
寝不足のお陰で、カナダまでのフライトはグッスリ。一瞬で家に着いたって感じ。ちなみに、最近カナダは意外に暖かい。１０度前後だったし、雪も全くなかった。でも、俺がついた翌日、早速雪が降って、外を見ると今は真っ白。
でも、寒いのなんて忘れて、明日からはラス・ベガス！楽しんできま〜す！

Big day yesterday. First, BBQ with my MBA folks yesterday (click here). It was a blast!
Then I went to have supper with Saku-san family, who I've not seen for a couple of months. Beautiful restaurant and great food.
What a great day it was.

From the two famous quotes above (ha ha), you may have guessed that I am in a pretty busy stretch right now! From a scientific perspective, I'm writing up an article as we speak. As for the MBA, all the exams, homeworks, group works, etc. are making my head spin. To top it off, I got elected into the Student Council, so there's work, too. Lot's of fun though. And this weekend, I'll be volunteering as an interpretor (Japanese/English/Spanish/Chinese) at the International Karate Championships, at the Nippon Budokan. Exciting! And as for my band RaiA we went into the studio last Saturday to record a song, so this weekend will be the mixing part. We've got concerts lined up for the fall also.
And the BIGGEST NEWS of all!!!! I got a call from my great buddy Greg just before I went into the studio on Sat, telling me that his wife is PREGNANT!!!!!

Funny thing. The song we went in to record is called "Beautiful life", and it's inspired by our bassman's 3 yr-old daughter. She's the cutest thing. See photo at the bottom. Maybe our song can be Greg's kid's song, too!
So my dear readers, please spread some sunshine, even if it's for someone you don't know, and write in a little nice comment for Greg and Elsy!
Well, all in all, if this is not living life to its fullest, it's pretty much the best I can do.
上記の名言（ニョホホ）からもうお分かりだと思いますが。。。ヤバいぞ、この忙しさ！取りあえず、本職の方は論文書いているでしょう。MBAの方も試験、宿題、グループワークなで目眩がするでしょう。つうか、選挙でクラスのコミッティーにも選ばれちゃったので、そちらもまたいろいろと大変やわ。楽しいけどね。そして、今週末は日本武道館で空手の糸東流世界大会で通訳のボランティア（日、英、西、中）。これも面白そう。んで、バンドのRaiAも先週末レコーディングしたので、今週末はミックシングする。そろそろライブもあるし。
そうそう、週末にカナダの大親友のグレッグから電話あり。奥さん妊娠だって！！！メッチャ嬉しい。おめでとう！
面白い事に、週末レコーディングした曲は"Beautiful Life"と言って、ベースマンの娘がインスピレーションなの。メチャメチャ可愛い子だよ。写真見てみん。みんなも是非祝福のコメントを入れてあげてください！日本語でも良いです！責任を持って、翻訳しておきま〜す。

Last weekend (July 22-24) was Novartis Biocamp, an original and fun camp aimed at teaching bio-business planning. The 19 chosen bio-minded boys and girls were split into 4 teams and we had to come up with a business plan overnight, for a little competition on the final day. Needless to say, in terms of business planning, it was disastrous. But in terms of dreaming and thinking about crazy stuff, it was a lot of fun. More importantly, in terms of learning the fundamentals of working in a team toward one goal, it was tremendously insightful. Following the competition, two participants were chosen to represent Novartis-Japan at the international biocamp in Singapore in October (CONGRATULATIONS Komoto-san and Ishido-san!).
The name of our team was: STAY, which stood for Sayaka, Tetsu, Akira, and Yoshinari (but in retrospect, the name may not have been very suitable for a bunch of younsters wanting to "GO" on a trip to Singapore! Ha ha. ). Our team’s idea was a product that uses antibodies to take away allergens away from living space. It was inspired by certain parts of my “Biotecture” idea. Although our team didn’t win the best business plan and I didn’t get tickets to Singapore, I left the camp feeling extremely enriched by the great lessons learned, wonderful friends and colleagues made, and important networks established.

先週末（７月２２−２４日）はノバルティスバイオキャンプでした。この合宿の目的はバイオビジネスマンの育成。選ばれた１９名のバイオ関係の若者は、初日に４チームに分けられた。各チームはビジネスプランをたてて、プレゼンで競い合うという、面白いキャンプ。最優秀賞として、１０月に行われるシンガポールのバイオキャンプへ招待される（甲本さん、石堂さん、おめでとうございます！）。
みんな頑張ったよね！勿論、全くビジネスノーハウのない人ばかりなので、一回目のプレゼンは自分らを始め、みんなコント並みに可笑しかった。でも、最終日には皆さん凄く進歩して、良いプレゼンを見せてくれました。ファイナルプランに至るまでにも、ドラえもん的な夢話などいっぱいできて、超楽しかった。そして、チームワークも学べたし、ビジネスプランの構築も経験できた。さらに、それを専門家の先生たちに評価していただいたので、本当にためになった合宿でした。
ちなみに、我々のチームのアイディアは生活空間からアレルギー物質を抗体で駆除するシステム。これは「Biotecture」のアイディアから借りて来たものもある。チーム名は「STAY」でした。それはチームメンバーの名前の頭文字で出来たもの。Sayaka, Tetsu, Akira, Yoshinari.でも、考えてみれば、シンガポールに行きたがっているのに、「STAY(残れ！)」は若干縁起悪かったかも。。。へへへ。まあ、確かに、僕たちは優勝しませんでした。縁起よりも実力の問題だったけどね！でも、良い経験、お友達、ネットワークなど、シンガポール旅行を遥かに超えるものを得たと思っています。
ノバルティスバイオキャンプの皆さん、ありがとうございました！またみんなで集まりたいですね！
I recently applied to the Novartis Biocamp 2006 and GOT IN! Beautiful. 20 biotech-minded people were selected based on his/her CV and an essay on his/her Biotech-related vision. I don't know how many people applied, but I'm sure glad I got in, 'cuz you know what!? 2 of the 20 participants will be selected to go to the International Novartis Biocamp in Singapore in October! So I have a 1/10 chance to go to Singapore...ALL EXPENSES PAID OF COURSE!
Anywho, maybe sleep deprivation is finally catching up with me, but I'm gonna add this COMPLETELY unrelated material into this post and leave you with this funny exercise that I got from my great buddy Greg's dad (Yvon). As a drummer, I thought this would be easy but... well... you try.
1. While sitting at your desk, lift your right foot off the floor and make clockwise circles with it.
2. Now, while doing this, draw the number "6" in the air with your right hand, without your foot changing direction!
...ha ha ha...not easy eh?
この前、外資系の大手製薬会社ノバルティスが主催しているNovartis Biocamp 2006に応募しました。選考基準は本人の履歴書とバイオテクの分野においてのビジョン・夢を語る作文です。応募件数は知らないけど、20名の参加者の一人として選ばれた！やったねテッちゃん！頑張って作文書いた甲斐があったよ！さらに！このバイオキャンプで2人が選ばれて、シンガポールで開催される国際大会の方に招待される！ってことは10%のチャンスでシンガポールのただ旅行に行ける！ワクワク！
ここで、極端に話を変えます。大親友のグレッグのオヤジ(Yvon)から面白いお遊びを教えてもらったので、紹介するよ。自分はドラマーとして、こんなの楽勝だろうと思ったけど。。。まあ、やってみそ。
１．椅子に座って、右足を上げて、時計回りの方向に回す。
２．同時に空中で右手を使って「6」の字を書く。ただし、足の回転方向は変えちゃダメ！
。。。へへへ。。。どう？難しいでしょう！
McGill MBA Japan Program. First classes this past weekend. Despite having slept only a total of 11-12 hours from Thurs night to Sun (WITHOUT WATCHING THE WORLD CUP!!), I must say that I am very pleased with my experience. Statistics, which we have been told is a MONSTROUS course, went by pretty smoothly. I know, I know, the worst is probably on its way, but I'm just glad that I'm already done with 25% of the lectures (since we only have 8 lectures in total). The other course, Organizational Behavior, is a BLAST! This course is not only highly informative, but is also a LOT OF FUN. There are many simulations and class discussions and the subjects are just FASCINATING.
Both professors are amazing! And best of all, we have a highly dynamic group, and I think we're gonna bond pretty well.
週末にマギールMBAジャパンプログラムの授業が本格的に始まりました。早速先週渡された予習課題のお陰で、木曜から日曜の間に取れた睡眠時間は全部で11-12時間。それもワールドカップ観ずに！でも、厳しそうだけど、いまのとこは非常に満足です。一科目目の統計学は難しいけど、頑張ります！まあ、それしか言えないですよね。幸い、先生は説明上手だし、エネルギッシュなお方なので、何とかなりそうです。そしてもう一つの授業は「組織行動学」。これがまたメチャメチャ面白い授業！内容としてはシムレーションやディスカッションなどが多く含まれていて、みんなとの交流も深めつつ、実践的な手法で学べるので楽しい。こういう心理学的な知識は今後の人生に大きく役に立つと思う。
一番よかったのはやっぱり、楽しくて、面白そうなクラスメートたちがいっぱいいる事だね！
So it's officially started. Saturday was the orientation day for the McGill MBA-Japan Program. A great class composed of about 35 students (6 Japanese, 3 women).
We also met the second year students, who gave us some precious survival tips! We were told to work very hard for Stats and Finance. Well actually, work very hard for everything and EXTREMELY hard for Stats and Finance. Thanks for the info!

始まっちゃいました！McGill MBA-Japan Programが土曜日に正式に始まりました！35人位のクラスでした（日本人は６人、女性３人）。２年生の先輩たちからも色々とお話聞きました。統計学とFinance（日本語でなんて言うんだっけ？）が一番大変だそうです。こんな僕ですが、先輩やクラスメートのの方々、よろしくお願いします！
Recently, I have been very fortunate to have a chance to conduct collaborative research work with a highly renowned FISH expert (Professor T) and his wonderful team. And just for the record, "NO" I have not been trying to catch the next rainbow trout! The experiment, FISH (which stands for Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization), serves the purpose of locating genes on specific chromosomes, which we can visualize under a fluorescence microscope.

While trying to scan a lot of photos for my HP and my BLOG, I came across these two cute photos. The first one is my little niece (?? cousin's kid...is that a niece also?) and the dog, Ralph. The second one is a little girl called Valeria, who was the kid in the host family with whom I stayed when I went to Ecuador. Whenever someone was mad at her, she would always try to get away by kissing the person. It always worked with me. Ah...women...

日本のアパートを出てから25時間後にカナダの家に到着！最後の力を振り絞って、カナダで載せる初記事！何か特に言いたい事があるわけではないけどね。ただ、無事に着きましたよ～！って感じ。写真に写っているのは母親と弟です。家のベランダからの景色で、夏バージョン(ゴルフ場)と冬バージョン(スキー場)です。

25 hours after leaving my apartment in Japan, I arrived at my home in Canada (see photos, summer and winter versions of the view from my balcony). Here I am, gathering my last bit of energy to write this first ever post from Canada! ...not that I have much to say... Well, I arrived safely!
