Wow. More than a month has gone by since my last post. It's the longest stretch that I've gone without updating my blog. Many things happen in a month when you've got your work, your MBA, your band, etc. But this past month, there just seemed to be more. Some good. Some bad. But hey, I try to make the most of every experience by making it a learning experience. And plus, no one can say that I lead a boring life!
Well, I don't have time to write too much so I'll just tell you about the best thing that has happened in the past month. You see, I had been working on a big article with another post-doc that was working in our laboratory until last June. Some of the stuff that I did for this paper can be found here, and the work was presented at an international conference in January. And now, just a few days ago, that paper got accepted for publication at a big journal called Molecular Cell!! Oh what a joy! With this big paper, I can finally feel that I have been able to give back to my boss and to this laboratory, where I've had the honor of being a part of for the past 3 and a half years. Now, I have one more paper that I want to write, after which it'll be time to move on to something new.
Speaking of moving on to something new, one of the authors on our paper, a master's student J, taught me a little saying: "A rolling stone gathers no moss". Initially I thought that it was a nice proverb meaning that you can stay fresh and on your edge if you move around constantly (like I do). But apparently in Japanese, the message is that in order to succeed, you should be patient in every endeavor and persevere until the end.
Well, I think that both are right and wrong and that, as are many things in life, a healthy balance is needed. At the pace of today's life, one must learn to be able to adapt to many conditions and face new challenges constantly. In other words, be receptive to "change". But on the other hand, quitting things too quickly and frequently will make you a "Jack of all trades, master of none", which will hurt your credibility tremendously. So it is imperative that one strikes a good balance between the two. However, since the perception of "balance" depends on the individual, it's a pretty tough target to reach while you're young and have little experience, isn't it?

ワオ。一ヶ月以上もブログを更新していなかった。こんなに長い間更新しないのは初めて。いや〜、一ヶ月も過ぎれば、色んなことがあるよ。特に仕事、MBA、バンド、などを平行してやってればね。いいこともあれば、悪いこともある。でも、どんなことがあっても、その経験を無駄にしないで、成長したいもんだ。そして、誰にも「テツの人生はつまらないな〜」と言われないように生きなきゃ！
まあ、あまり長々と書いている時間がないので、この一ヶ月間で起きた一番いいことだけ皆に教えよう！実は前からここの元同僚と一緒にやっていた仕事があるんだ。この仕事の為にやってた実験に関しても、昔ちょこっと書いたこともあるし、この仕事も一月に国際学会で発表した。そして、数日前にこの仕事の論文が通ったんだよ！モレキュラー・セルと言うとてもいい雑誌に出るので、本当に嬉しい。やっとこの論文で、今まで３年半もお世話になった先生とこの研究室になにかを形にして返せた気分になれた。自分の中では、後もう一報論文を書いて、次のステップを踏もうかなと思っている。
次のステップと言えば、あの論文のオーサーの一人である、後輩のJ君からいい話を教えてもらった。それは「転がる石にコケはつかない」ということわざ。で、直ぐ外人的に解釈した僕は、「ドンドン新しい環境に飛び込んだり、新しいことにチャレンジしたりすれば、人間さびないで、つねにフレッシュでいられる」ということかと思った。ところが、「哲さん、違いますよ」っていわれて、ビックリ。実は日本では「コケが生えるまで腰を据えて一つのことに取り組みなさい」ということだそうで。
まあ、本当の答えは人生の色んなことにも当てはまると思うけど、やっぱり「バランス」じゃないですかね。今の世の中の変動のペースについて行く為には常に新しい環境と新しいことにチャレンジし続けなければならない。でも、落ち着きなく、飽きっぽく、コロコロ職も変えたり、やってることも終わらせずに違うことを始めたりすると、何一つ自信を持ってやれることがない人間になって、信用もなにもなくなる。もう、「どうしたらいいんだよ！」って思う若者もいっぱい居るでしょうね。結局「バランス」というのも本人の「見方」によって決まるから、経験の少ない、若いうちに丁度良いバランスを見つけるのは難しいようね。
