MBA done. Finally. MBA終了。

Yes, I officially received the grade for the last course of my MBA. It's all over now.

Working full-time while studying, the last 2 years have probably made me age about 10. Especially the last 2.5 months, as I had to juggle the MBA and a new job, along with some carry-over work from the last job, in addition to moving. But all that is behind me now.

Getting to the end of the MBA was pure hell. But I don't regret one single minute. I keep telling everyone I know, it was probably the best decision I have ever made in my career. And now I have started a new position that precisely requires the kind of background that I have built over the past years, i.e., heavy scientific knowledge along with management know-how and linguistic skills. Of course, it's a very challenging job and every single day is a learning experience. But it's so exciting and I don't think I could have written a better scenario for my real career start.

Title change、

It's been 2 years since I started this blog in Feb. 2006, pretty much right after my birthday. So what better time than today, 2 birthdays later, to make a little title change. Of course, "2008: A new start for Tetsu" was out of the question, so I had to think about it for a while. Since I talk a lot about things I do and many of my philosophies on this blog, I decided on "Tetsuology" as this title.

2007 Last post, 2007

Our 2006 year-end family trip to Las Vegas seems like yesterday, and here we are already done with 2007. Highlights this year for me include: 1) Publishing a paper in Molecular Cell, 2) the birth of Greg’s twins, Salomé and my God-daughter Oriana, 3) doing a wonderful summer MBA program in Montreal, and most recently 4) landing a job at a Japanese pharmaceutical company. Oh, yes, this is the latest news that I haven’t blogged about yet, as I wanted to close this busy year with this big news! But then today I learned that my little brother also just got a new job, so it’s a doubly wonderful year-end for our whole family.

Well 2008 definitely does not appear to be any less colorful for me, as a few big things are already on the horizon. One is obviously the end of my long academic life and the concomitant start of my first “real” job in April, and another major event will be finishing my MBA in May! In a certain sense, this may be the real “start” that I was talking about when I first set up this blog almost two years ago with the title: “2006: A New Start for Tetsu”.

To all: a great year 2008, the year of the mouse.

Greg's birthday

So another year has gone by and it's a second birthday post for my buddy Greg! Appy Bird-day Greg! Every year I get ahead in February, and he always catches up with me in October. Well, this year is a little special as it is his first birthday as Dad of twins! You're way ahead here man! ...as I haven't even gotten to the starting line!

Lately, Greg's finally started to explore the cyberspace more and have recently uploaded a couple of videos of himself playing the guitar. Great stuff! Check it out!

Here's Greg playing Horizons (very old Genesis). Some of you who've heard me play it know that Greg's got it down much better! Damn!

And here's Greg playing Bach. This piece was originally written for the harpsicord but Greg plays it marvelously on the classical guitar.

So, from the above, we can safely draw the conclusion that having twins is a piece of cake, since Greg's got all the time in the world to practice guitar to such levels! Ha ha ha. Or alternatively, maybe his wife's doing all the work! Want proof? Look at Elsy sweeping in the video of Greg playing Horizons (around 1min 25sec)!

Oriana and Salomé

They're here! Oriana and Salomé! Born on April 23! Father Grégoire and Mother Elsy. And most importantly, Godfather Tetsu! ha ha ha... Well, to be specific, Godfather of Oriana.

Yup, my best buddy got married long before me AND now have kids, before I even had time to catch up in the first race! And two for the price of one! Slow down man... please? Now I guess my only goal is to get married before he has grandchildren!.... I think that can be done... I hope... And maybe I'll even surprise myself and have kids of my own before that also!

So I'll leave Greg to tell you in the comments which one is Oriana and which one is Salomé. And NO it's not because I don't know myself.

...OK, yes it is. I don't know... But let's guess! I think that it's as follows:

Oriana is, in the...
Top photo: the baby on our left (grandma's right).
Middle photo: the baby in front.
Bottom photo: the baby on our right.

Can you guess which one is which? If you do, write your answers in the comments! The only hint is, Oriana is heavier by about 500g.

Congratulations Greg and Elsy...and good luck! And tell us the answers!

Article in Molecular Cell and the next step、

Wow. More than a month has gone by since my last post. It's the longest stretch that I've gone without updating my blog. Many things happen in a month when you've got your work, your MBA, your band, etc. But this past month, there just seemed to be more. Some good. Some bad. But hey, I try to make the most of every experience by making it a learning experience. And plus, no one can say that I lead a boring life!

Well, I don't have time to write too much so I'll just tell you about the best thing that has happened in the past month. You see, I had been working on a big article with another post-doc that was working in our laboratory until last June. Some of the stuff that I did for this paper can be found here, and the work was presented at an international conference in January. And now, just a few days ago, that paper got accepted for publication at a big journal called Molecular Cell!! Oh what a joy! With this big paper, I can finally feel that I have been able to give back to my boss and to this laboratory, where I've had the honor of being a part of for the past 3 and a half years. Now, I have one more paper that I want to write, after which it'll be time to move on to something new.

Speaking of moving on to something new, one of the authors on our paper, a master's student J, taught me a little saying: "A rolling stone gathers no moss". Initially I thought that it was a nice proverb meaning that you can stay fresh and on your edge if you move around constantly (like I do). But apparently in Japanese, the message is that in order to succeed, you should be patient in every endeavor and persevere until the end.

Well, I think that both are right and wrong and that, as are many things in life, a healthy balance is needed. At the pace of today's life, one must learn to be able to adapt to many conditions and face new challenges constantly. In other words, be receptive to "change". But on the other hand, quitting things too quickly and frequently will make you a "Jack of all trades, master of none", which will hurt your credibility tremendously. So it is imperative that one strikes a good balance between the two. However, since the perception of "balance" depends on the individual, it's a pretty tough target to reach while you're young and have little experience, isn't it?

What do you think?

My Japanese Aint Bad - Part II、

Last summer, I wrote about taking the J-test. But since that test is not THE MOST well-known Japanese proficiency test, last December I decided to take the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) from the Japan Educational Exchanges and Services, which EVERYONE knows.

The results are in. With an 89% overall, I officially passed Top Level Japanese, or "Ikkyu" (~70% is the passing grade). According to the description (click on photo (don't mind the mug shot)), candidates passing the "Ikkyu" typically have received more than 900 hours of formal Japanese instruction. I guess in my case, I was able to get the "Ikkyu" with no formal learning due to wonderful multilingual environments provided by my parents. So, as I wrote in a previous post ("Learning Languages, Tetsu's Way"), I think that, although formal learning IS important and will give you a great start, combining it with the countless other ways to learn languages will probably yield the best results.

2006

The title of this blog is “2006: A New Start for Tetsu”. Without going into details and enumerating things, I would just like to say that it was a wonderful year during which countless good things happened, many of which will have changed my life forever, and I’ll have my parents, co-workers, and friends to thank.

So, obviously, this blog was started in 2006. End of February to be precise. At first I wrote about two entries per week. Then with the start of my MBA, the pace dropped to once per week (and sometimes less). In total, there are about 75 entries, and below is my selection of the most popular or most memorable posts.

このブログのタイトルは ”2006: A New Start for Tetsu” 、「2006:哲の新たなスタート」です。

It's published! An article on yours truly in the 30th Anniversary Special Edition of the Quebecer weekly magazine L'Actualité. It's a great honor for me to have been chosen as one of the "30 Quebecers that make a difference in the world (30 Québécois qui font une difference dans le monde)"... in my case, Japan. But I haven't seen it yet since I still haven't gotten my copy yet! And I also really look forward to reading about the 29 others! For those of you living outside of Quebec, I'm pretty sure you can get the magazine at an international bookstore (given that it's a major publication). Maybe you wanna print out the above photo and bring it with you to the store (click on it for enlargement). Just don't forget...the article is in French! I'll surely translate it very soon.

Big thanks to L'Actualité and to Isabelle Grégoire, the fantastic journalist who wrote the article... and who has also become a dear friend of mine!

Interview with a Nobel Prize Laureate、

Just a month ago, I wrote a small post on this year's Nobel Prize. Today, I'll tell you about a more personal experience that also has some links to the Nobel Prize. Well, this summer I had one of those "once in a life time" chances to meet and interview the Nobel Prize Laureate of 1993, Prof. Phillip A. Sharp of MIT.

I had to keep it a secret for so long because the purpose of the interview was to get a surprise birthday message for my supervisor Prof. Handa, who used to work with Prof. Sharp. The interview took place on May 30, but we only showed Prof. Handa the clips last Wed, Nov. 8, during a ceremony in his honor for his 60th b-day. And it was a HUUUUUGE success! Not only was Prof. Handa awestruck and moved, the whole audience was numbed by the touching message from Prof. Sharp. It was really a worthwhile experience!

Since the ceremony, Prof. Handa has thanked me I-dunno-how-many-times. But I truly feel that "I" got the best deal in this project. I mean com'on, "I" was the one who had the chance to talk to and get to know (and get to "be known by") a Nobel Prize Winner!! Now HOW COOL IS THAT?! And let me tell ya, it was one of those humbling experiences that changes your life.

So in reality, "I" am the one who should be most thankful to Prof. Handa and everyone else involved in the project, starting of course with Prof. Sharp, who took a hefty chunk of time out of his extremely busy schedule and provided wonderful, inspiring, and even humorous material for the final video, Ms Siafaca (Sharp lab manager), who organized everything smoothly and secretly on the Boston side, Dr. Wada and Maida, who made everything happen on the Tokyo side, and finally, my parents for tagging along and helping out with miscellaneous things like rolling the camera, etc.

So, again, from the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU!!!

Nobel Prize 2006

m(_ _)m Sorry for not writing for so long! Wow! It's incredible how busy doing an MBA and a post-doc at the same time can be! Well, this post won't be long either! Gotta get back to work. But don't worry, I'm preparing somethin' good for next week!

Today, I just wanted to let you know that this year's Nobel Prize in Chemistry is given to Roger D. Kornberg for his studies of the molecular basis of transcription, which is my field of studies! ...("so what" you say?... true...it's not like I did anything good to humanity...)

Next RaiA Concert and Recording of 「Beautiful Life」のレコーディングとRaiAの次のライブ

Scenes from the recording studio.

My band RaiA recorded our new song "Beautiful life" in one night on Saturday, the 9th. This song is inspired by our bassman's cute daughter. Coincidentally, the same night my great buddy Greg called me from Canada to tell me that his wife got pregnant!

Please click here to listen to it. Any comments would be greatly appreciated! Also, if you don't know how to download it, let me know and I'll send the song to you by e-mail.

By the way, for those who don't know, I play the drums and do the back-vocals on this song.

This recording comes at a great timing, as we will have our next concert on Oct. 15! Please come see us! It will be at Kichijoji Crescendo. Click here for a map.

Shooting in Montreal,

Just a while a ago, I wrote about the massive dog killing in China. The world is really becoming extremely violent. 9/11 was just a couple of days ago. Today, I heard about the shooting rampage at Dawson College in Montreal.

When I was doing my undergraduate at McGill University, I lived in an apartment complex with my great buddy Greg at 320 Sherbrooke Street. That's right across the street from Dawson College. I could've witnessed the killing. Hell, I could've been killed on my way home from doing my groceries.

Busy, but fun.

"Unless a man undertakes more than he possibly can do, he will never do all that he can."
---Henry Drummond---

"Why sleep now, when you can sleep ad libitum when you're dead?"
---Tetsu---

From the two famous quotes above (ha ha), you may have guessed that I am in a pretty busy stretch right now! From a scientific perspective, I'm writing up an article as we speak. As for the MBA, all the exams, homeworks, group works, etc. are making my head spin. To top it off, I got elected into the Student Council, so there's work, too. Lot's of fun though. And this weekend, I'll be volunteering as an interpretor (Japanese/English/Spanish/Chinese) at the International Karate Championships, at the Nippon Budokan. Exciting! And as for my band RaiA we went into the studio last Saturday to record a song, so this weekend will be the mixing part. We've got concerts lined up for the fall also.

And the BIGGEST NEWS of all!!!! I got a call from my great buddy Greg just before I went into the studio on Sat, telling me that his wife is PREGNANT!!!!!

Funny thing. The song we went in to record is called "Beautiful life", and it's inspired by our bassman's 3 yr-old daughter. She's the cutest thing. See photo at the bottom. Maybe our song can be Greg's kid's song, too!

So my dear readers, please spread some sunshine, even if it's for someone you don't know, and write in a little nice comment for Greg and Elsy!

Well, all in all, if this is not living life to its fullest, it's pretty much the best I can do.

Canine Holocaust,

How can anything this crual happen in today's societies. Picturing my own pet undergoing such crualty before my eyes just sends shivers down my spine.

|DDiary|NNews|PProf| Novartis Biocamp

Last weekend (July 22-24) was Novartis Biocamp, an original and fun camp aimed at teaching bio-business planning. The 19 chosen bio-minded boys and girls were split into 4 teams and we had to come up with a business plan overnight, for a little competition on the final day. Needless to say, in terms of business planning, it was disastrous. But in terms of dreaming and thinking about crazy stuff, it was a lot of fun. More importantly, in terms of learning the fundamentals of working in a team toward one goal, it was tremendously insightful. Following the competition, two participants were chosen to represent Novartis-Japan at the international biocamp in Singapore in October (CONGRATULATIONS Komoto-san and Ishido-san!).

The name of our team was: STAY, which stood for Sayaka, Tetsu, Akira, and Yoshinari (but in retrospect, the name may not have been very suitable for a bunch of younsters wanting to "GO" on a trip to Singapore! Ha ha. ). Our team’s idea was a product that uses antibodies to take away allergens away from living space. It was inspired by certain parts of my “Biotecture” idea. Although our team didn’t win the best business plan and I didn’t get tickets to Singapore, I left the camp feeling extremely enriched by the great lessons learned, wonderful friends and colleagues made, and important networks established.

Thank you everyone for making the Novartis Biocamp a wonderful experience. Hope to see you again soon.

Sayaka, Tetsu, Akira, Yoshinari.

|NNews| My Japanese ain't bad,

I wanted an official evaluation of my Japanese, so I did a J-test about a month ago. I guess it's like your TOEFL and TOEIC, except it's for Japanese. Got the results. Pretty happy about it, considering the fact the I CAN'T WRITE KANJI (I can type though)! I did well in the first parts (hearing and reading) but of course didn't do too well in the writing. But I still ranked 31st in 3521 candidates. Not bad for someone who's never studied the language huh? But can't be satisfied. Must learn to write kanji! Practise, practise, practise!

|FFun| DDiary| NNews| Biocamp and my Right Foot、

I recently applied to the Novartis Biocamp 2006 and GOT IN! Beautiful. 20 biotech-minded people were selected based on his/her CV and an essay on his/her Biotech-related vision. I don't know how many people applied, but I'm sure glad I got in, 'cuz you know what!? 2 of the 20 participants will be selected to go to the International Novartis Biocamp in Singapore in October! So I have a 1/10 chance to go to Singapore...ALL EXPENSES PAID OF COURSE!

Anywho, maybe sleep deprivation is finally catching up with me, but I'm gonna add this COMPLETELY unrelated material into this post and leave you with this funny exercise that I got from my great buddy Greg's dad (Yvon). As a drummer, I thought this would be easy but... well... you try.

1. While sitting at your desk, lift your right foot off the floor and make clockwise circles with it.
2. Now, while doing this, draw the number "6" in the air with your right hand, without your foot changing direction!

...ha ha ha...not easy eh?
