Connie Talbot、

Saw this some time ago and have been wanting to write about it since. Little girl, Connie Talbot, 6 years old. Absolutely amazing voice. It really gave me the goosebumps. And the missing front teeth! How cute is that!! And she dedicated the song to her dad for father's day! He must have been SOOOOOO proud.

I thought it was pretty funny when Amanda (the lady judge who had tears rolling down her cheeks the whole time) said: "She told me earlier that she was gonna make me cry..." and Connie nods "Yes".

Harvey Mason and Steve Gadd

My friend P contacts me the other day and goes: "wanna go see Harvey Mason tomorrow?" My answer, before he had time to finish his question, was: "Harvey Mason!! Of course!!" So the next day, I met up with P and we went to the concert hall together. At the entrance, we see the poster for the show and it said: "Harvey Mason Trio, Steve Gadd and the Crusaders, Dave Koz and friends." The first thing that came to my mind was, "geez, Gadd is also playing here...I wonder when his show is?!?!" Then it hit me. I was holding a ticket to see Mason AND Gadd! P himself didn't even know. We were pleasantly surprised. VERY pleasantly.

Thanks to years of attendance at the Montreal Drumfest, I've had the opportunity to see MANY of the top drummers in the world, including Dennis Chambers, Vinnie Colaiuta, Terry Bozzio, Thomas Lang, Virgil Donati, Joe Morello, Dom Famularo, Dave Weckl, Horacio Hernandez, Chad Smith, you name it... but not Gadd, yet. And he's been number one on my drummers-to-see-before-I-die list. Then the opportunity comes to me out of nowhere, without any expectations whatsoever.

The show was absolutely amazing. It started with a short set with Mason and his trio. Some wicked swinging took place.
Harvey Mason

Then Gadd brought out his Crusaders and he showed us how to groove, with some insanely simple, yet delicate and nuanced drumming. Beautiful. Just beautiful. Then of course, in the middle of his set, he lets a solo rip. Thunderous.
Steve Gadd

The third set was a bonus. Some saxophonist called Dave Koz. He and his band gave a great show. He also brought out a cute little 19 year-old called Kelly Sweet. She made me think of Michelle Branch with her voice. Nice pair of... lungs.

Thanks P, it was truly an amazing show. Now, you wanna help me see number two on my drummers-to-see-before-I-die list? That would be funkmeister David Garibaldi!

Finally, here I leave you with another little clip of Thomas Lang, who I talked about in a surprisingly popular post some time ago. It was recorded at the 2007 Montreal Drumfest (too bad I wasn't there!). What a machine this guy is.

Greg's birthday

So another year has gone by and it's a second birthday post for my buddy Greg! Appy Bird-day Greg! Every year I get ahead in February, and he always catches up with me in October. Well, this year is a little special as it is his first birthday as Dad of twins! You're way ahead here man! ...as I haven't even gotten to the starting line!

Lately, Greg's finally started to explore the cyberspace more and have recently uploaded a couple of videos of himself playing the guitar. Great stuff! Check it out!

Here's Greg playing Horizons (very old Genesis). Some of you who've heard me play it know that Greg's got it down much better! Damn!

And here's Greg playing Bach. This piece was originally written for the harpsicord but Greg plays it marvelously on the classical guitar.

So, from the above, we can safely draw the conclusion that having twins is a piece of cake, since Greg's got all the time in the world to practice guitar to such levels! Ha ha ha. Or alternatively, maybe his wife's doing all the work! Want proof? Look at Elsy sweeping in the video of Greg playing Horizons (around 1min 25sec)!

Singing in the subway、

When I went to Ecuador (a long time ago), I took a bus on a long trip from Quito to Esmeraldas with my buddy Greg. I remember we sat at the back of the bus where there were a couple of guys who brought guitars. So basically we just sang and partied with total strangers in a bus! That was so much fun.

Well, that was in Latino-America, where everyone is genetically predetermined to be jolly and sociable. But here's a clip of a wonderful group called Naturally 7 (don't know if they are pro's or not), who got the crowd going in a subway in Paris! As one guy pointed out in the comments, it would definitely be fun to see them in a jam-packed Japanese subway!

Drum like Thomas Lang、

Today, I'll pull out some clips that I saw on YouTube some time ago of an Austrian drummer called Thomas Lang. This drummer is simply INSANE! I've seen him live once at the Montreal Drum Festival and lemme tell ya, of the gazillion amazing drummers I've seen in my life, he won't be one that I will forget.

You will see many displays of his rock solid groove and incomprehensible chops throughout the videos. In the middle of the first clip you will see that he doesn't use his hands but you still hear rapid high notes playing. That's his left foot!! Then he puts on some wicked licks over that left foot ostinato (repeated phrase). In the second clip you see him warming up... In the third and fourth clips, you see him doing crazy stuff using only sticks. The other two in the videos, Johnny Rabb and Marco Minnemann, are also amazing drummers that I've seen at the Montreal Drumfest. I've actually met Johnny, who taught me his famous single-handed roll at KOSA, a wonderful drum camp that I went to some time ago. Thanks Johnny!

(You may find that the videos are a little slow on my blog. In that case, you can double click on the videos and see them directly on YouTube.)

2006

The title of this blog is “2006: A New Start for Tetsu”. Without going into details and enumerating things, I would just like to say that it was a wonderful year during which countless good things happened, many of which will have changed my life forever, and I’ll have my parents, co-workers, and friends to thank.

So, obviously, this blog was started in 2006. End of February to be precise. At first I wrote about two entries per week. Then with the start of my MBA, the pace dropped to once per week (and sometimes less). In total, there are about 75 entries, and below is my selection of the most popular or most memorable posts.

このブログのタイトルは ”2006: A New Start for Tetsu” 、「2006:哲の新たなスタート」です。

Next RaiA Concert and Recording of 「Beautiful Life」のレコーディングとRaiAの次のライブ

Scenes from the recording studio.

My band RaiA recorded our new song "Beautiful life" in one night on Saturday, the 9th. This song is inspired by our bassman's cute daughter. Coincidentally, the same night my great buddy Greg called me from Canada to tell me that his wife got pregnant!

Please click here to listen to it. Any comments would be greatly appreciated! Also, if you don't know how to download it, let me know and I'll send the song to you by e-mail.

By the way, for those who don't know, I play the drums and do the back-vocals on this song.

This recording comes at a great timing, as we will have our next concert on Oct. 15! Please come see us! It will be at Kichijoji Crescendo. Click here for a map.

Orquesta de la Luz |DDiary|MMusic|

Watch out girls!

Got invited to a GREAT concert yesterday! The band: "Orquesta de la Luz", Japan's premier salsa band. My friend K knew one of the members, Mr. Fukumoto "trompeta del diablo", and he got us in at nearly half price. Muchas gracias! Que Dios le bendiga! And of course, lots of thanks to K also. The party went wild and we all had a ball.

Also, K's husband zRyu, gave us a salsa dancing lesson during the concert. According to K, those were precisely the steps zRyu employed to walk straight into her heart...(gees, what a great metaphore). And now that I also possess those steps (ha ha, I wish!)... here I come ladies...

By the way, it was the couple's 8th wedding anniversary! Congratulations! I hope that when I reach my 8th wedding anniversary with my future wife ("near" future I hope), I will also be dancing the way you guys were last night!

Thank you all for coming to RaiA's Concert yesterday! I hope you enjoyed the show! We had a lot of fun. We even had a great party after the show, with about 25-30 people crammed into about 16 seats in an izakaya (Japanese restaurant for drinking). Anyways, hope to see you at the next show!

By the way, due to stage lighting, it appears that I dyed my hair blond, but in reality, it was white and pink!
